Duties of the County Auditor
The office of the County Auditor was created in 1870 as part of a revamping of county government.
The duties of the office covered areas that had previously been given to the County Judge in 1851,
in the first Code of Iowa, and then to the Clerk of Court in 1861, with the formation of the Board of
Supervisors. The State Legislature added the duties of Commissioner of Elections in the early 1970s.The County Auditor is an elected position, with a term of four years.
Compile, calculate, and monitor the county’s $14,000,000 operating budget
Prepare year end financial statements for the State and Auditing Firm
Process accounts payable and payroll for all county offices and employees
The Auditor prepares board agendas and minutes for meetings.
The auditor also performs daily administrative duities for the board including answering the telephone, processing mail, etc. In addition, the office is responsible for official documents, contracts, and proceedings.
The Auditor is responsible for the management, backup, and recovery of the courthouse network and computer systems.
Process nominations papers and prepare ballots
Recruit and manage election officials
Maintain voting equipment
Prepare canvass and certificates of election
Maintain voter registration records
The Auditor's office processes various licenses and permits such as:
Cigarette Licenses
Sale and Serving of Alcohol Permits/Licenses
Fireworks Permits
Update transfer and plat books to reflect current ownership
Determine tax rates and property taxes for taxable property based on valuations, credits, and certified local budgets
Prepare valuation reports for other taxing entities’ budget preparation
Administer tax incremental financing districts
