Secondary Roads - Equipment Operator / Motor Grader

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the County Engineer; to operate a motor grader for the purposes of maintaining secondary roads; and to perform related duties as required.  Iowa County Secondary Roads supervises all secondary roads within Iowa County, consisting mostly of roads that are; outside city limits, not interstates, and not state highways.

Shop Location:  Marengo, Iowa

Example of Essential Job Functions:

The following are a list of duties that are required, but not limited to:

• Operate a motor grader for the purposes of grading gravel and dirt roads.
• Operate a motor grader for the purposes of plowing snow off gravel and dirt roads.
• Operates end-loader to load materials into truck.
• Performs routine mechanical maintenance of equipment operated.
• Keeps site, tools and equipment clean and orderly.
• Controls brush in ditches using chemical or hand tools.
• Operates a tractor mower to cut grass on shoulder of roads.
• Installs and takes down snow fence.
• Patch roads.
• Records maintenance performed on equipment and work accomplished each day.
• Checks and spreads surfacing materials.
• Do minor repair to traffic control devices.
• Do manual labor as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• May be required to work after hours during snow and emergency events.

Entry Requirements:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must pass a background check.
• Must pass department physical ability test.
• Knowledge of the operation and mechanical functions of a truck.
• Knowledge of the operating hazards and the applicable safety precautions in the operation of a truck.
• Ability to operate heavy trucks and perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
• Knowledge of the practices of vehicle maintenance.
• Two years of experience driving a truck; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Valid CDL is required. Class B is acceptable, Class A is preferred.
